Low Back Pain

Low Back Pain and Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic Partners of Central Durham can help people with low back pain by improving joint mobility in the spine and pelvis, reducing muscle tightness, and supporting healthier movement patterns. Treatment may include spinal manipulation and/or mobilization (hands-on joint techniques), soft-tissue work, dry needling, and individualized recommendations such as stretching, strengthening, activity modification, and ergonomics. Sometimes we will also use therapies such as non-surgical decompression, electrical stimulation, shockwave, ultrasound or laser.

Common Types of Low Back Pain

  • Mechanical low back pain: Pain related to how the joints, muscles, and connective tissues are moving/working; often worse with certain positions or activities and better with rest or changing position.
  • Muscle strain / ligament sprain: Irritation or micro-tearing of soft tissues after lifting, twisting, overuse, or an awkward movement; typically causes localized aching, stiffness, and spasm.
  • Disc-related pain: The spinal disc can become irritated or bulge/herniate, sometimes causing back pain that is worse with sitting, bending, coughing/sneezing, or repeated flexion.
  • Radicular pain (“sciatica”): Nerve-root irritation/compression that can cause pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness radiating into the buttock and/or leg.
  • Spinal arthritis (degenerative changes): Wear-and-tear changes in joints (facet joints and/or discs) that may cause stiffness, reduced range of motion, and pain that can flare with prolonged standing, walking, or certain movements.
  • Spinal stenosis: Narrowing around the nerves/spinal canal, more common with age; symptoms may include leg pain/heaviness with walking or standing that improves with sitting or bending forward.
